Reducing invasive species in the Peace-Athabasca Delta

Reducing invasive species in the Peace-Athabasca Delta

Thanks so much to the John D’Or Prairie Grade 9s who helped us with the control of invasive species along the streams on their territory!

This map shows the reaches of streams where we surveyed the riparian zone for invasive species.  Red indicates that we found invasive species, primarily Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense) and green indicates that no invasives were found. We went to all the red areas to control, ie. remove or destroy, the invasive species.

Little Red River Cree Nation has warned of the growing number of invasive plants growing in the riparian zones of the wetlands, creeks and rivers of their homelands in the Peace-Athabasca Delta and areas to the west. This project will focus on identifying areas of infestation and then initiating control to reduce the infestation.

We are looking for people in the Peace-Athabasca Delta and areas west to use the EDDS maps app to record the location of invasive species. A primary concern is Canada Thistle but we want to know about all invasive species growing in this wetland and river complex.

Our Partner

We want to thank our partner Little Red River Cree Nation for their work on this and are excited for the chance to work together.
